Australian barista champion Scottie Callaghan has been named one of the top three baristas in the world.
Callaghan has finished third in the tightly contested 2010 World Barista Championships (WBC) held in London.
The competition featured one of the largest fields ever of 53 national champions competing for the title.
To qualify for the WBC Callaghan, who is head trainer for Belaroma Coffee here in Australia, won the Australian Barista Championship at the 2010 Australasian Specialty Coffee Association (AASCA).
At the WBC it was American barista Michael Phillips who came through to grab the top spot over five other baristas who made it through to the final round.
It was Callaghan’s second time competing at the WBC. He credits his top three placing to the time he dedicated not only perfecting his signature espresso, but also a recent around the world trip on which he met with some of the world’s top roasters, baristas and café owners.
“Being one of the top three baristas in the world is fantastic, and all the hard work, dedication, training and the sheer passion I have for the barista craft has paid off,” said Callaghan.
