HANOI – Vietnam’s coffee exports in the October/April period of 2006/07 have reached a massive 880,000 tonnes, according to the GSO, which is 58% higher than in the same 7 months of 2005/06. CoffeeNetwork notes that the 7-month figure for the current season surpasses many of the full-year totals since 1999/00.
Only two entire seasons have seen shipments over 880,000 tonnes, according to GSO data. In 2000/01 exports reached 893,000 tonnes in the 12 months of the coffee year, with the 2003/04 volume being 958,000 tonnes.
April exports alone have been projected at 120,000 tonnes, 33.3% up on the 90,000 tonnes in the same month a year earlier. March shipments have been revised notably higher to 174,000 tonnes from the provisional 120,000 tonnes.
Local traders note that the volume of exports is easing since the significant jump in January/March, but that the monthly total for April still remains extremely high.
All indications are that the 2006/07 crop will be finalised at a minimum 1.1 million tonnes (18.5 million bags), they add. Production in 2005/06 is estimated to have reached around 840,000 tonnes (14 million bags).
