Recent storms have not hampered construction of a Starbucks at 1246 E. Tipton St., Seymour.

Although walls built last week fell this week in a storm, Andy Corman, project manager for the Starbucks store being built by Sullivan Corp. of Noblesville, said it is only a “little speed bump.”

He said crews were on their way to continue building the Starbucks. Construction of the outer shell of the building is scheduled to be completed by July 1.

Kelly Hand, marketing specialist for Starbucks Coffee Co., said in an e-mail last week Starbucks at Jackson Park Shopping Center on East Tipton Street should open this fall.

“The hours of the new coffeehouse will be a reflection of the needs of the Seymour community,” Hand said. The Seymour Starbucks will employ 20 to 30 workers.

“Qualified full- and part-time partners (employees) who work a minimum of 20 hours per week receive a benefits package that includes comprehensive healthcare, dental and vision benefits, 401(k) with matching funds and stock option grants through Bean Stock — Starbucks’ companywide stock option plan,” Hand said. “Partners also receive a free pound of coffee each week and complimentary beverages while working.” Hand said it has not yet been determined if the Seymour coffeehouse will have high speed wireless Internet access, but she said Starbucks does provide T-Mobile HotSpot service to 4,300 Starbucks coffeehouses nationwide.

Jeremy Gray, Seymour city building commissioner, said according to the building permit that was issued April 13, the store will be 1,856 square feet.

Hand said the coffeehouse will also be equipped with drive-thru access.

When asked why Starbucks chose Seymour as a location, Hand replied by saying “Why not?”

“Starbucks is always looking for great locations to better meet the needs of our customers and reach people who may not have the opportunity to visit our stores.”

Bill Bailey, president of the Greater Seymour Chamber of Commerce, said the Starbucks’ arrival in Seymour is similar to other businesses that have signaled the community’s “arrival.”

“About 25 years ago, a community felt it had arrived when a McDonald’s came to town,” Bailey said. “Twenty years ago, it was a Wal-Mart. Today, you feel as though you’re a real community when Starbucks comes to town. This is part of a cycle.”
