Coffee farmers complain about thieves | ||
One coffee farmer who owns a large farm in Mavis Bank, says thieves make off with coffee valued at approximately half a million dollars each year. He was speaking with RJR News Thursday afternoon after he appeared as a complainant against Nigel Hibbert in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.
The police say 10 bags of coffee were found in a yard occupied by Mr. Hibbert and he was arrested and charged with praedial larceny by the Mavis Bank police. He pleaded guilty with explanation. Hibbert told the court that he was at a shop in the area when two of his friends who he knew to be farmers asked him to help them carry a quantity of coffee. He told the court the men fled the area after his arrest. Hibbert was granted bail in the sum of $200,000 with his own surety. Hibbert was told to surrender his travel documents and report to the Mavis Bank Police every day. A stop order at all ports was also issued against him by the court. This is the second time in 12 months that Dennis Edwards has appeared in court as a complainant against a person accused of stealing his coffee. Earlier this year, Malcom Finn was sentenced to 200 hours of work on Edwards’ farm after he was found guilty of stealing ripened coffee. |
