The national harvest of coffee beans, according to the survey conducted in March is 2,654,499 tons, or 44.2 million bags. For February, this figure represents a decrease of 4.7%. The total area occupied with the cultivation of coffee has increased over the previous month (0.2%), totaling, 2,350,917 hectares. The area for harvest in 2010 is 2,138,443 hectares, higher than the previous estimate (0.1%).
The decreases shown in this month compared to February, can be credited to the Holy Spirit, which is down from 18.1% in the estimate of production and 18.7% in revenue expected on the basis of poor weather conditions in southern state, where the Arabica coffee is grown. In this region, called the \”mountain coffee\” has suffered from prolonged drought, which explains the decreases.
In Minas Gerais, problems observed in previous months, as high temperatures in the Zona da Mata and excess blossoms in the southern state, caused damage to coffee plantations, although it maintained the prospect of \”full crop\” for the whole country.
