For years Blue Mountain Coffee has been sold to distributors who mark-up the price before selling the premium product in China. But one of the country’s leading producers, the Mavis Bank Coffee Factory, has taken its JABLUM brand to the Chinese market.
Chief Executive Officer of the factory, Senator Norman Grant, says this allows Chinese distributors to purchase coffee directly from Jamaica. In the meantime, Senator Grant remains upset at what he calls the slow pace in reaching a settlement to compensate coffee farmers who were affected by Hurricane Ivan last year. He says before Hurricane Ivan the sector earned in excess of US $40 million per annum. Since the hurricane the sector’s income has been reduced by 40 per cent. Senator Grant says if the sector gets the necessary support it will recover in another four to five years. |
